Health Security

We innovate to reach for policies and opportunities that bring new value to existing, often overwhelmed programs, focusing on those with medically and socially complex needs, such as people with disabilities and older adults. This work runs the gamut from developing Medicaid-funded prevention and health promotion services for people with disabilities to educating and activating caregivers to help people make effective use of their insurance coverage. We work with community, private, and public-sector partners to improve population health; we advocate to expand access to the uninsured; and we monitor state and federal health policies as they relate to medically and socially complex populations. Our initiatives include:

Patient Empowerment – This first-of-its-kind stakeholder training project for people with traumatic spinal cord injuries is working to prepare them to play active roles in SCI research. Visit website

Healthy Chicago Hospital Collaborative – The collaborative strives to promote a collective impact on health outcomes in the city of Chicago through an environment that fosters learning, sharing of resources, data, and best practices. Visit website

Small Business Health Collaborative – ACA and Small Business HDA partnered with the Campaign for Better Healthcare and Small Business Majority to to disseminate information on the ACA’s Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, to Illinois small businesses, and to survey their health insurance needs and concerns. Illinois Health Matters – IHM provides detailed information on what health reform and health access mean for the people of Illinois. A forerunner to the state’s Get Covered Illinois marketplace, IHM serves as a thought leader to advocate for improvements to health care system in Illinois. Visit website

ACA Training and Advocacy – HDA HDA helped states interpret, adapt, and apply opportunities for older adults and people with disabilities presented by health care reform in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and created a curriculum of training and technical assistance for navigators and assisters in Illinois.
